Aluminum is one of the most widely used materials for CNC machining because of its excellent machinability, lightweight properties, corrosion resistance, and good strength-to-weight ratio.

However, after CNC machining, aluminum parts often require additional surface finishing to improve their appearance, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, or functional performance.

The right surface treatment depends on the aluminum alloy, application, required appearance, dimensional tolerances, and operating environment.

1. Anodizing

Anodizing is one of the most common surface treatments for CNC machined aluminum parts.

Unlike a conventional coating, anodizing creates a controlled oxide layer on the aluminum surface through an electrochemical process. It can improve corrosion resistance, surface hardness, and appearance.

However, anodizing is not a process that completely hides machining marks. CNC tool marks, scratches, material defects, and differences between aluminum alloys may still be visible after anodizing.

For high-end cosmetic parts, the surface condition before anodizing is therefore very important.

2. Powder Coating

Powder coating is another popular finishing option for aluminum parts.

Unlike anodizing, powder coating creates a relatively thick protective coating on the surface of the component. It is available in many colors, textures, and gloss levels.

If a customer requires a specific color, providing a RAL color reference is usually more reliable than using a photograph, because photographs can vary significantly depending on lighting and camera settings.

3. Sandblasting

Sandblasting is commonly used as a pre-treatment or decorative surface finish for CNC machined aluminum parts.

Abrasive media is blasted onto the surface to create a uniform matte texture.

Sandblasting can:

  • Remove minor surface imperfections
  • Create a uniform texture
  • Reduce the visibility of some machining marks
  • Prepare the surface for anodizing
  • Create a modern matte appearance

A common combination is:

CNC Machining → Sandblasting → Anodizing

For example, sandblasted matte black anodized aluminum is widely used for high-end equipment housings and components where a clean, non-reflective appearance is required.

4. Brushing

Brushed aluminum is produced by creating a directional texture on the aluminum surface using abrasive materials.

The result is a consistent linear pattern that provides a distinctive metallic appearance.

Brushed finishes are often used for:

  • Decorative panels
  • Equipment housings
  • Automotive interior components
  • Consumer products
  • Architectural components

Brushing can also be combined with anodizing to create a more attractive and durable surface.

5. Polishing

Polishing creates a smoother and more reflective aluminum surface.

Depending on the required finish, aluminum parts can be polished to achieve anything from a smooth satin appearance to a highly reflective surface.

Polishing is commonly used for:

  • Decorative components
  • Automotive parts
  • Display components
  • High-end equipment
  • Custom hardware

The final appearance depends heavily on the original CNC surface quality and the polishing process.

6. Electropolishing

Electropolishing uses an electrochemical process to remove a controlled amount of material from the surface.

It can improve surface smoothness and cleanliness and may be used for specialized aluminum applications.

However, it is generally less common than anodizing or powder coating for standard CNC aluminum parts.

For applications with specific surface requirements, the process should be evaluated according to the material and component geometry.

7. Chemical Conversion Coating

Chemical conversion coating, sometimes known as chromate conversion coating, creates a thin protective layer on aluminum.
